Alfred Habdank Skarbek Korzybski came to America as an obscure Polish count and published his masterwork, Science and Sanity, in 1933. I first heard his name in a seminar in 1977 with Richard Bandler and John Grinder, one of whom credited him with saying, "The map is not the territory." As modelers they were interested in teaching us the principles of modeling. A modeler makes some form of map of the territory, and not matter how comprehensive or powerful the model is, one must remember it is can not represent all of the territory.

What kind of people would confuse the map with the territory? Ordinary people who introject the maps and models that people have given them of the world in which they live. People who are scientists, teachers, parents, architects, engineers, religious leaders, in essence, people from all walks of life at one time or another, to one extent or another, in some place or another confuse their maps of the territory of the world with the world. People who seriously confuse the map and the territory will often into therapy when those maps of the territory are terrifying, depressing, gloomy, angry, or other life-restrictive.

On this links page I have endeavored to give you, dear Reader, a handy reference to the various books I have reviewed which impinge upon Korzybski's innovative work in the field which later became called "General Semantics." A look at the list of books and authors on this page will give you a sense of the importance of Korzybski's work in our time. He was an obscure Polish count when he came to America, and almost a hundred years later, he remains an obscure Polish count, but his work has infused a sense of sanity into the lives of millions of people in the world who have yet to hear or pronounce his name.
