3. ON A PERSONAL NOTE:

== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==

Out Our Way:

The month got off to a great start with my taking a photo of the artist who did the dolphin painting that graces the cover of "The Spizznet File", my newly released novel. The artist is my grandson Chris Bayhi and he looks quite handsome as he holds his copy of the book. Chris is now 16 and produced this artwork at the tender age of 5.

Chris's younger brother, Gabriel, also got his photo taken with Granpa for writing the following about me for Grandparents Day in his second grade class. The words in quotes are the ones that Gabe provided.

My grandfather is as handsome as a "king".
My grandfather is the best because he lets me "play on his computer".
My favorite thing about my grandfather "He looks handsome."

With my sudden decision to go to Rome with Battle Bell, a member of my club, things suddenly became very busy as I prepared for the trip. I left on the 12th and was in Rome for the Ides of March, St. Patrick's Day, St. Joseph's Day, and the Vernal Equinox. On the Ides of March our small seminar group stood on the spot where Julius Caesar was fatally stabbed by Brutus exactly 2046 years to the day. We walked a bit and overlooked the spot where Marc Antony gave his famous oration at Caesar's funeral. To the left we could see where the funeral pyre of Caesar's body happened. On St. Joseph's Day, the patron saint who saved Sicily, I attended Holy Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in Christendom, celebrated by Pope John II. On the Vernal Equinox, the day in Spring when the length of the day equals the length of the night, I spent the 12-hour day and the 12-hour night in the Leonardo Da Vinci Airport because of a cute Italian practical joke known as an impromptu air traffic controllers's strike. The joke was on them, however, because I got to travel home in first class the next day. After my extensive exposure to the Italian sense of humor — it shows up in how things occasionally work the way they're supposed to, and mostly don't — all I can say is this: the trains run on time. Thanks, el Dulci! The only foreign country I might consider visiting next is Arkansas. They got mountains, they talk funny, they eat strange foods, but in a pinch I can walk home!

Only one review this month due to my Rome trip - can't think much when your feet are hot and tired from walking around granite and marble monuments all day. When I returned home, it took me about a week to recover from the trip. I had taken over 557 photos and a couple of dozen movie clips with my Mavica that needed to be processed and sorted out. Plus my notes of the trip that needed to be word processed. And, to echo the sentiments of Dorothy on her return from Oz, "There's no place like home!"

Once I was home, a part of me remained in Rome — every night for almost a week my dreams took place in Rome or some place with large stones, etc. During one of these dreams I was walking around Rome, and we were naming things, mostly old ornate stone and granite monuments, when we came upon a young man who had just died. Our tour guide told us that we were to give this young man a name, not just any name, but one of our names, and whoever gave their name to him would die, but the young man would live. The five of us pondered the matter seriously, and a wonderful thought came to me, which I shared with the group, "Someone has already given his name so that this young man may live! He has also given his life so that this young man may live!" I explained that what we needed to do was to give Christ's name to that young man. We gave him the name of Christ by christening him, and he came to life.

This dream raises many questions, but a few that I'd like to share with you to ponder: 1) Who was the first Christian? [the first one to take the name Christ upon himself] 2) Who was the second Christian? 3) Whose name did you receive at birth when you first received life? 4) Did you receive another name during a ceremony later in life? [confirmation, marriage, etc] What kind of new life accompanied that name? The process of naming, either the giving or receiving of a name is a powerful one, one well worth pondering.

On my flight home from Rome I sat next to Maura O'Connell, an Irish folk singer. I mentioned that I'd named my first child, Maureen. "Little Maura," she commented. "What does Maura mean in Irish?" I asked her. "Mary," she replied. I thought about that awhile. I named my three daughters, Maureen Grace Ann, Carla Marie, and Yvette Marie. Now, some thirty-six years later I find out that I had given all three of my daughters the name, Mary, and out of my awareness, up until now. What names did you give your children? What patterns can you see in those names as you ponder them?

In the Catholic Church I grew up in, it is a tradition to give a saint's name to a child at birth or baptism (christening), either as its first name or at a minimum, its middle name. Thus when I chose Maureen Grace, the objection was raised by someone that neither name is a saint's name. Reluctant to back off either name, I gave in to the pressure by adding "Ann" after "Grace". I knew that there was a St. Ann. Thanks to my dream, I now understand the purpose behind this abstruse practice of giving a saint's name to a baby. It ensures that the baby is given a name that has been carried by a Christian before! If your father is a Christian and you receive his name, it is a Christian name, whether or not it was a saint's name, but if you make up a name for your son, there is no assurance that the name has ever been given life by a Christian before.

Roman generals took the names of the country of their greatest battles, like Scipio Africanus. Celtic heroes gained a new name as a result of his earliest deeds. Saul took on the name Paul after he saw the Christ light coming from the Earth on his way to Damascus. Simon the fisherman was given the name Peter by Christ Jesus, making him the second Christian. The first was the Jewish man of Nazareth, who, after his baptism in the Jordan by John, took on the name Christ thereafter, becoming the first Christian.

5. WEBSITE ADDITIONS FOR APRIL
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Thanks to a Counselor friend who will remain anonymous, I have added a Counselor's Corner to the website in which I will post ingenious and interesting approaches to assisting others using insights from the science of doyletics. In the first example, Sam, a young man is lead through a speed trace by someone trained in NLP and Ericksonian hypnosis. The script of the session is reprinted with the gracious permission of the counselor.

http://www.doyletics.com/counselr.htm

For those who would to see and hear me talk, my good friend Evan Soulé sent me a note that my Hilton Hotel speech about Joe Newman's Energy Machine was available on-line at http://www.josephnewman.com/ under Segment 2. I just played it and determined that it's halfway in the middle of the segment. [Yes, I was about twenty years younger then.]

In response to questions from people who have had trouble learning to do the speed trace, I have added a new page on the website devoted to a Training Exercise for newcomers to doyletics. It explains a simple and effective speed trace that is guaranteed to teach one how to do an effective speed trace on the first try. Look on the home page for the two young boys on a bicycle with training wheels to find the link to this page:

7. REVIEWS and ARTICLES for April:
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

And for my Good Readers, here’s the new reviews and articles for this month. The ARJ2 ones are new additions to the top of A Reader’s Journal, Volume 2, Chronological List, and the ART ones to A Reader’s Treasury.

1.) ARJ2: From Elephants to Einstein - Answers to Questions by Rudolf Steiner

In this series of discussions with workers at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Steiner answers their questions, ranging from where Elephants go to die to the relativity of Einstein. Here's a brief excerpt from my review:

"We live because we are dying all the time, our body is being consumed in the process of living, just as our automobiles are propelled by the consumption of the contents of its gasoline tank. When our ether and astral bodies, that consume ptomaine like a BMW does gas, depart, the ptomaine continues to increase until the entire body decays. It is as though our bodies are BMWs that dissolve into gasoline when we drivers abandon them!"

Read the Review at:
http://www.doyletics.com/arj/fetervw.htm

2.) ARJ2: From Limestone to Lucifer - Answers to Questions by Rudolf Steiner

In this series of discussions with workers at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Steiner answers their questions. Here's a brief excerpt from my review:

You can also learn a tremendous amount from Rudolf Steiner by reading all the lectures in this book. This paltry review can do little but give hints of what insights are contained within. It would be fitting to close with a view of Christianity that he shares with us that he says would allow Christianity to be "understood everywhere on earth."

[page 228] The divine spirit we should venerate is not in a particular place on earth but is connected with the power of the sun, the living nature of the sun which the Christ has taken into himself. And the sun is truly for the whole of humanity. No one in Europe can say, when the sun is shining on his head, that this is a different sun from the one that is there for the Egyptians, or the Chinese, or the Australians. Anyone who truly accepts that the Christ power comes from the sun has to accept the general religion that is for all humanity.

My reviews are not intended to replace the purchasing and reading of the reviewed books, but rather to supplant a previous reading or to spur a new reading of your own copy. What I endeavor to do in most of my reviews is to impart a sufficient amount of information to get the reader comfortable with the book so that they will want to read it for themselves. My Rudolf Steiner reviews are more detailed and my intention is bring his work to a new century of readers by converting his amazing insights into modern language and concepts.
